Organically Grown
Organic farmers are stewards of the land whose practices promote soil fertility and a healthy farm ecosystem.
Fertile Ground produce is not certified organic, though we are working on beginning the process of transition in 2010. We do, however, embrace organic farming practices and are always happy to welcome guests and answer any questions about our farming methods. We are members of the Ecological Farmers Association of Ontario & Canadian Organic Growers.
At Fertile Ground, we assure that we will:
- Refrain from using synthetic herbicides, pesticides, fungicides or fertilizers in growing our food
- Build & maintain healthy soils through annual crop rotations, use of compost, cover crops and green manures, and minimization of tillage
- Conserve natural resources by reducing erosion and pollution of air, soil and water through responsible farming practices
- Use organic seed where possible
- Reduce food miles by selling produce locally
- Maximize the nutritional value of food by distributing it quickly & practicing careful post-harvest handling
- Arrange for the distribution of excess produce to people who need it
- Work in cooperation with other farmers & the neighbouring community to create a more sustainable way of life
- Sustain the land in healthy condition for future generations
