Garden Space Needs

Here's a chart that tells you approximately how much garden space each seedling will need when it gets to full size. Experienced growers will be able to organize their garden so seedlings can share space based on how long they take to reach full size, but if you're new to gardening, you'll be best off giving everything the full space they need right from the moment you plant them. If plants are too crowded, they won't grow well, and you won't get as much food. Everybody needs room to grow!!  (1 little pro-tip:  you can tuck lettuce, Asian greens, kohlrabi and green onions in around larger summer plants like tomatoes, peppers & eggplants. They're quick-growing & should be harvested before the larger plants need all of their space)

So…. To be clear…. If you have 10 square feet of garden space, don't buy more seedlings than add up to 10 in the last column (if you're buying some of the greens in the pro-tip above, you can cheat A LITTLE)

Frost Hardy means the plants can handle cold weather & frost without being damaged - go ahead and plant them early. If you don't see a Y in that column, make sure they're covered up if nights get cold!

If you don't see a veggie listed here, that's because we don't sell the seedlings. Most likely, that means you can (should!) just grow it from seed. Veggies to grow from seed sown directly into your garden include carrots, beets, peas, beans, spinach, turnips, baby salad greens, radishes, cilantro & dill.
